Luca Barra
Full Professor University of Bologna

Luca Barra (PhD) is Full Professor of Cinema, Photography, Radio, Television, and Digital Media at the Department of the Arts, University of Bologna, where he teaches courses on television and media, with a particular focus on industrial, production, distribution, and audience reception and consumption dynamics.

His research interests include cultures of media production and distribution; the international circulation of media content (and its national mediations); the history of Italian, European, and U.S. television; long-running fictional seriality; comic and humorous genres; and the evolving landscape of contemporary media. He is Coordinator of the Master’s Degree Programme in Information, Cultures and Media Organization (INCOM). He is an elected member of the Steering Committee of the European Network for Cinema and Media Studies (NECS) and Vice-Chair of the Television Studies Section of the European Communication Research and Education Association (ECREA). Since 2017, he has directed the doctoral summer school “Mediating Italy in Global Culture”, in collaboration with Brown University, Dickinson College, The Ohio State University, the University of Michigan, and Wesleyan University. He serves on the editorial board of il Mulino. Rivista di cultura e politica. He is Editor-in-Chief of VIEW. Journal of European Television History and Culture and Director of Studi culturali. He has been a Visiting Professor at Brown University (Providence), the University of Montreal, and Roehampton University (London). For nearly twenty years, he has been a scientific consultant for Mediaset/RTI on the project “Link. Ideas for Television”.

COURSES

The course explores how media and publishing companies operate, with particular attention to organizational structures, production processes, and the main business models in the sector. By analyzing the economic and technological transformations of contemporary media, the course provides a foundational understanding of sustainability, innovation, and strategic management in media and communication organizations.
