{"id":149994,"date":"2026-02-11T11:54:14","date_gmt":"2026-02-11T10:54:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bbs.unibo.it\/?p=149994"},"modified":"2026-02-11T11:54:14","modified_gmt":"2026-02-11T10:54:14","slug":"geopolitics-and-geoeconomics-understanding-the-present-to-shape-the-future","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bbs.unibo.it\/en\/geopolitics-and-geoeconomics-understanding-the-present-to-shape-the-future\/","title":{"rendered":"Geopolitics and geoeconomics: understanding the present to shape the future"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a world marked by profound geopolitical and economic transformations, the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Geopolitics and Geoeconomics<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> seminar series \u2013 held by professors <\/span><b>Alec Ross<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Giorgio Prodi<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> within the Professional Masters at Bologna Business School \u2013 offered participants a strategic lens through which to interpret the global context in which today\u2019s businesses operate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two sessions, on January 27 and February 3, explored the forces shaping global power: from the shifting balance between the United States and China to the impact of emerging technologies, from supply chain vulnerabilities to the growing competition over strategic resources, particularly rare earth elements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>A rapidly evolving landscape<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The seminar began with a critical reflection on post-Cold War narratives: the idea of a \u201cflat\u201d world, free from systemic conflict and governed solely by market logic, has been clearly disproven. Geopolitical instability, declining trust in liberal democracies, and the rise of new spheres of influence are reshaping the rules of the game.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the same time, <\/span><b>technological innovation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is generating a new geography of power, where digital platforms, data, semiconductors and <\/span><b>artificial intelligence<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are key drivers of competitiveness and sovereignty. A significant focus was also placed on the <\/span><b>geopolitics of critical minerals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 resources essential to the digital and green economy \u2013 whose supply chains are now heavily concentrated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>The student perspective<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For <\/span><b>Angelo Bolis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, participant in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professional Master in Business Management \u2013 Food and Wine<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the seminar represented an opportunity to grasp the scale of these shifts:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are facing a<\/span><b> global transformation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> unlike anything seen since World War II. In this context, it is vital that companies understand how geopolitics is now deeply influenced by <\/span><b>technological progress<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and act accordingly in shaping their strategic decisions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through real-world case studies, open discussions, and classroom interaction, the seminar reinforced an awareness of how topics such as artificial intelligence, great-power competition, and resource management are redefining the global economy:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe added value? A<\/span><b> multicultural environment <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the opportunity to engage directly with faculty. It was a key learning moment for those of us preparing to operate in increasingly interconnected markets.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Shaping informed decision makers<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Geopolitics and Geoeconomics<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> seminar series is part of the cross-cutting educational offering of the Professional Masters at Bologna Business School, integrating management expertise with <\/span><b>systemic thinking<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In a time when business decisions can no longer be made in isolation from the global context, this interpretive capacity is an essential skill for the leaders of
