{"id":146396,"date":"2025-12-16T12:46:01","date_gmt":"2025-12-16T11:46:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bbs.unibo.it\/?p=146396"},"modified":"2026-01-08T17:44:16","modified_gmt":"2026-01-08T16:44:16","slug":"bbs-leadership-talk-with-andrea-pontremoli-innovation-speed-and-the-courage-to-fail","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bbs.unibo.it\/en\/bbs-leadership-talk-with-andrea-pontremoli-innovation-speed-and-the-courage-to-fail\/","title":{"rendered":"BBS Leadership Talk with Andrea Pontremoli: Innovation, Speed, and the Courage to Fail"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Andrea Pontremoli, CEO and partner of Dallara Automobili,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was the featured speaker at the <\/span><b>penultimate BBS Leadership Talk of 2025<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, held on Friday <\/span><b>12 December,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the <\/span><b>BBS New Campus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pontremoli shared with the <\/span><b>Bologna Business School Community<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a broad and highly practical reflection on <\/span><b>innovation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>speed<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014two dimensions that, in his experience, are not abstract concepts but everyday practices of <\/span><b>leadership<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>organization<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b>industrial vision<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The event opened with remarks by <\/span><b>Max Bergami<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Dean of Bologna Business School<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who framed Pontremoli\u2019s long-standing relationship with the School. A faculty member for many years and a key figure in the <\/span><b>Executive Master in Technology and Innovation Management<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Pontremoli is also very much \u201cat home\u201d in community moments\u2014fondly recalled, with a touch of irony, as the \u201cofficial DJ\u201d at graduation ceremonies. An introduction that immediately underscored the value of the <\/span><b>Community<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> itself: even in the context of such an intense and authoritative talk, feeling at home and actively involved matters, along with maintaining a sense of closeness and lightness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pontremoli\u2019s address\u2014more a <\/span><b>masterclass<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than a conventional talk\u2014covered the foundations of <\/span><b>innovation management<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, insisting on a distinction that is often overlooked: <\/span><b>innovation is not the same as invention<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Invention, he explained, is often the outcome of research and concerns a limited number of people. Innovation, by contrast, is a <\/span><b>collective phenomenon<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: it makes an idea usable by many and, in doing so, turns it into <\/span><b>economic and social value<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. From this perspective, a company is not only an \u201centerprise\u201d\u2014something that requires a group and cannot be done alone\u2014but also a <\/span><b>society<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: a complex system governed by rules, dynamics, cultures, and relationships. And it is precisely here that innovation truly takes place.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most powerful themes of the talk was <\/span><b>error<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, addressed not as something to be avoided but as a lever for <\/span><b>learning and acceleration<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The thesis is both simple and uncomfortable: to improve, one must make many mistakes\u2014quickly and at low cost. At <\/span><b>Dallara<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, this is made possible through the intensive use of tools and simulations that allow countless alternatives to be tested before reaching a physical prototype. The point, however, is not only technological; it is <\/span><b>cultural<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. An undeclared mistake remains a mistake; a declared mistake becomes <\/span><b>knowledge<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And knowledge, when shared, grows. It is no coincidence that Pontremoli mentioned the presence within the company of a role specifically dedicated to managing errors, confirming how organizations can institutionalize what often remains implicit and individual.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alongside <\/span><b>competition<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>error<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Pontremoli focused on what truly makes the difference \u201cwhen technology changes a hundred times a day\u201d: <\/span><b>people<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. From here, he moved to a very concrete discussion of <\/span><b>values<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, translated into measurable behaviors. At Dallara, the guiding values are <\/span><b>humility<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>loyalty<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b>curiosity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Humility as the ability to listen and suspend presumption; loyalty as genuine respect in relationships with colleagues, clients, and suppliers; curiosity as a systematic training in asking \u201cwhy,\u201d going beyond immediate answers. The key point is that values are not assessed through intentions but through <\/span><b>behaviors<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: small, everyday indicators\u2014even seemingly trivial ones, such as punctuality\u2014become signals of the quality of the social system in which people work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another central thread of the talk was <\/span><b>uniqueness<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For Pontremoli, innovation means being able to answer the question, \u201c<\/span><b>What do I have that is unique?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d Truly essential features are often taken for granted and cease to be differentiating. Innovation, therefore, lies in the ability to build and communicate a distinctive element. From this comes a strategic reflection on market trajectories: on the one hand, increasingly low-cost products; on the other, increasingly premium products and services. In this scenario, Italy\u2014given its productive structure\u2014has less room in the \u201clow cost, large scale\u201d arena and greater opportunity in <\/span><b>high value<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, provided three elements are held together: <\/span><b>innovation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>marketing<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b>brand<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Marketing, Pontremoli stressed through concrete and memorable examples, is not an embellishment: even the best egg in the world, if it does not \u201ccluck,\u201d risks not existing in the market at all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The talk then widened its lens from the individual business to the <\/span><b>territory<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, presenting examples and figures related to the <\/span><b>Motor Valley<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the logic of the value chain. Innovation does not live within the boundaries of a single company, but within an <\/span><b>ecosystem<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that integrates businesses, education, and institutions. It is along this line that Pontremoli invited the audience to shift perspective: from an \u201cego-system,\u201d centered on oneself, to an \u201ceco-system,\u201d centered on relationships and the ability to generate shared value. A message fully aligned with the spirit of <\/span><b>Bologna Business School<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: educating people who can manage not only skills, but also the human and social complexity those skills must coordinate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the final part of the talk, the most provocative insight took the form of a question: if we assume that the technology needed to achieve what we want <\/span><b>already exists<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, then the issue becomes something else\u2014radically human: <\/span><b>what do you want to do?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> No automation can replace imagination, direction, and the responsibility of building a future in which people want to live and work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The exchange with the audience confirmed the highly engaged atmosphere in the room. In particular, a question about <\/span><b>younger generations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> prompted Pontremoli to overturn a common clich\u00e9: it is not true that \u201cyoung people are worse.\u201d The real risk is depriving them of <\/span><b>hope<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, by failing to offer ambitious goals and genuine trust. Trust, he reminded the audience, is one of the few things that must first be given in order to be received.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In closing, <\/span><b>Max Bergami<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> picked up three threads that had emerged with particular strength\u2014<\/span><b>error<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>relationships<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and a <\/span><b>long-term vision<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014before the event concluded with thanks and a convivial moment. A fitting ending to an evening that was dense yet practical, capable of bringing together industry and organizational culture, and above all of leaving the feeling of having encountered ideas that
