The first appointment with the Spring Edition of the 2019 Innovation Talks will host Massimo Rostagno<\/strong>, Director General\u00a0Monetary Policy of the European Central Bank. During the keynote speech\u00a0<\/span>The crisis and the monetary policy of the European Central Bank,\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>Massimo Rostagno will discuss with the BBS Community the ECB’s monetary policies and their impact on the euro area economy, with a special focus on the instruments deployed in response to the financial crisis and macroeconomic downturn that started ten years ago. The event is organized in collaboration with Philip Morris Italia<\/em>.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The primary objective<\/strong> of the European Central Bank’s monetary policy<\/strong> is to preserve price stability<\/strong>, keeping the inflation rate at around 2% over the medium term. The most important decisions of the ECB concern the reference interest rates<\/strong>, which affect the rates applied by commercial banks, thus affecting consumer spending and business investment. Alessandro Merli<\/strong>, Journalist and Adjunct Professor of BBS, will be the discussant of the event.<\/span><\/p>\n

Massimo Rostagno<\/strong> is Director of the Directorate Monetary Policy within the ECB\u2019s Directorate General Economics.\u00a0<\/span>Before joining the European Central Bank in 1998, he was a research economist at Banca d\u2019Italia (Bank of Italy) and later desk Economist in the European Department of the IMF.<\/p>\n

He has written on the political economy of fiscal policy, on the reform of social security, on the history and theory of monetary standards, on stochastic general equilibrium macro-modelling and on monetary economics in general. He has published in the American Economic Review<\/em>, the Quarterly Journal of Economics<\/em>, the Journal of Money<\/em>, Credit and Banking<\/em>, the Journal of Economic Dynamics<\/em> and Control<\/em> and contributed to several other publications.<\/span><\/p>\n
